Psilocybin microdosers demonstrate greater observed improvements in mood and mental health at one month relative to non-microdosing controls

  • The study highlights that psilocybin microdosers experienced greater improvements in mood and mental health compared to non-microdosers over a month-long period.
  • When older adults combined psilocybin with lions mane mushrooms and niacin, they showed notable psychomotor benefits, indicating a unique effect of such combinations.
  • Despite these findings, the researchers caution that the lack of a placebo control makes it difficult to draw definitive conclusions regarding the effectiveness of microdosing.

Understanding Microdosing

Microdosing, the practice of taking small amounts of psilocybin mushrooms, has gained popularity as a potential agent for enhancing mental health and wellness. The amounts consumed are typically low enough that they do not interfere with typical cognitive function. Despite its rising popularity, there is a limited number of empirical studies exploring the psychological and emotional effects of microdosing.

The researchers note that the present study involved 953 individuals who practiced psilocybin microdosing, contrasted with 180 individuals who did not microdose. This naturalistic study aimed to monitor the effects of microdosing over a 30-day period. The researchers reported modest yet significant improvements in both mood and mental health among participants who microdosed when compared to non-microdosing counterparts.

Challenges in the Research Design

One significant drawback noted by the authors is the absence of an effective placebo control within the study. This absence implies that results should be interpreted cautiously, as the participants were not blinded to their group assignments. Historical research both supports and questions the outcomes in microdosing, with findings suggesting some observed improvements may arise from participants’ expectations rather than the microdoses themselves.

Moreover, previous studies attempting to implement a placebo control also faced challenges, such as participants guessing their conditions correctly, which can influence emotional and psychological outcomes. Thus, breaking the blind can complicate interpretations, as subjective expectations may alter participants’ perceptions of their experiences.

Insights from the Study

Notably, age and mental health status appeared to play roles in how participants responded to microdosing. For example, older microdosers showed better psychomotor performance when combining psilocybin with lion’s mane mushrooms and niacin, suggesting possible synergistic effects that warrant further study. However, overall findings remain mixed concerning the effects of microdosing on cognitive functions, with the improvement primarily observed in psychomotor tasks rather than in spatial memory or processing speed.

The researchers infer that the growth of interest in psychedelic use for therapeutic purposes reflects a larger cultural attitude shift yet emphasizes the imperative for rigorously designed studies in this area. They advocate for future research endeavors to utilize placebo-controlled designs to disentangle genuine drug effects from psychological expectations, ultimately hoping to clarify the potential benefits of psilocybin microdosing.
