Exploring the effect of microdosing psychedelics on creativity in an open-label natural setting

  • Microdosing with psychedelic truffles has been found to enhance both convergent and divergent thinking performance in healthy adults.
  • Fluid intelligence, however, remained unaffected by microdosing, indicating that the cognitive improvements were specific to creativity and not general intelligence.
  • Future studies are required to validate these findings through more rigorous and controlled experimental designs to account for potential placebo or expectation effects.

Observational Study on Microdosing Psychedelics

The observational study involving 38 participants investigated the cognitive-enhancing effects of microdosing psychedelic truffles on creative thinking. Participants were assessed before and after consuming microdoses to measure their performance in creative problem-solving tasks. The study specifically monitored performance on the Picture Concept Task, which evaluates convergent thinking, and the Alternate Uses Task (AUT), which examines divergent thinking. Additionally, the Ravens Progressive Matrices task was used to gauge fluid intelligence.

Results revealed that microdosing led to significant improvements in both convergent and divergent thinking. This suggests that microdosing can enhance creativity at some cognitive levels, but did not show a corresponding improvement in fluid intelligence. The authors hypothesized that microdosing may help balance cognitive persistence and flexibility, thereby enhancing creativity without necessarily boosting overall analytic capabilities.

Understanding Creativity and Microdosing

The study provides a critical perspective on creativity by differentiating between convergent and divergent thinking. Convergent thinking involves finding a single solution to a well-defined problem, while divergent thinking encompasses generating multiple solutions to loosely defined problems. Notably, the authors emphasized that creative thinking is not an inherent trait; rather, it can be systematically influenced by behavior modifications or substances, including various psychopharmacological agents.

Previous studies had presented mixed results regarding psychedelics and creativity. For instance, one study using ayahuasca only reported improved divergent thinking but not convergent thinking, likely due to the higher doses involved. In contrast, microdosing may yield a more balanced cognitive enhancement due to its lower dosages, which generally leads to optimized cognitive performance. The involvement of serotonergic 5-HT2A receptors in the action of psychedelics is noteworthy, as their stimulation is linked to better learning and memory functions.

Study Considerations

In the study, the researchers measured interaction effects related to body weight, dosage, and prior experience to determine their influence on results. However, they found no significant interactions, which suggests that the effects observed were predominantly related to the microdosing rather than these factors. Furthermore, they considered the possibility of a testing effect, where participants may perform better simply because they had practiced the tasks previously. While not dominant, expectation effect might have played a role, meaning the participants might have exerted more effort during the second testing session, perhaps based on anticipation of improved performance.

Study Limitations and Future Directions

The researchers acknowledged several limitations in their study, including the quasi-experimental design and the lack of a control group, which makes it difficult to substantiate the findings fully. There was also a lack of blinding, which could introduce biases. The researchers speculated that mood might have influenced the results, particularly in relation to convergent thinking, which typically is not significantly affected by mood elevation alone. They stressed that further research is needed to definitively assess the impact of microdosing on creativity by using more controlled setups and accounting for potential confounding variables like expectations and learning effects.

Conclusion on Microdosing and Creativity

This study opens the door for the potential of microdosing psychedelics as a safer alternative to larger doses. By suggesting that microdoses can maintain some cognitive and emotional benefits associated with psychedelics, the researchers aim to encourage further investigation into their applications in enhancing creativity and assisting cognitive functions in healthy individuals. Future research with more rigorous methods will be vital to validate these preliminary findings and assess the broader implications of microdosing in cognitive enhancement.
