As microdosing is rapidly gaining popularity, so does the range of available microdosing products. In the past year, microdose shops shot up like mushrooms. However, the increasing number of microdosing shop also raises more questions. What should you pay attention to when you’re buying magic truffles for microdosing? What is a fair price for microdosing truffles? Do you go for pre-packaged Microdosing truffles, or do you prefer to weigh them yourself? And when do truffles expire? Read on to learn more about microdosing truffles.

In what quantities should you buy microdosing truffles?

If you want to microdose with psilocybin-containing magic truffles, you can buy your truffles in two different ways.

  • Option 1: buying a larger quantity of truffles, for example a pack of 15 grams. This is enough to microdose for four to ten weeks. It is advisable to dry the truffles, so you can keep them longer without them going moldy.
  • Option 2: Use ready-to-use Microdosing XP truffles, which are vacuum-packed in strips of 6 × 1 grams.

Option 1: larger portions of magic truffles

If you are going to microdose with magic truffles, want to have a somewhat larger supply and want to be able to dose very accurately, it is advisable to buy larger portions of truffles. Especially when your sweet spot (ideal dose) is on the high side. You will also need a 0.01 grams scale.

How long do magic truffles keep?

After opening, fresh magic truffles have a limited shelf life – approximately between six and ten days. However, this is only possible if you keep them open on top of a tissue in the fridge. Do you want to make sure your truffles don’t go moldy? Then dry them for a longer shelf life. This is done as follows. First, cut your fresh truffles into very small pieces. Put them on a tea towel and let them dry for a few days. When they are bone dry, grind them into powder. This will give you a consistent strength per microdose. Watch out for the trichoderma fungus

Some shops that offer microdosing products recommend keeping their 15 grams portions fresh and weighing your microdose with a scale. The danger with “fresh” storage is that after opening the vacuum-packed bag, the magic truffles that will only keep for 6 to 10 days, while they prescribe a Microdosing protocol of a month. You can imagine that in the last 20 days of your microsoding cycle the quality and freshness of the truffles will be questionable to say the least. The truffles also decrease in weight as they dry out over time.

After 20 days, 1 gram will be much stronger than it was at the beginning of your microdosing cycle. When the magic truffles come into contact with oxygen after it is opened, there is a risk of green mold forming. Just like with bread when it is exposed to oxygen for several days. They then turn green. This mold is called Trichoderma and is harmful to your health. This is one of the reasons why we recommend drying your large portions of magic truffles before you start microdosing.

Which type of magic truffle is suitable for microdosing?

We are often asked which type of truffle is most suitable for microdosing. There are six different types of Magic Truffles, and they are all equally suitable for microdosing. The main difference between the different strains is the amount of psilocybin they contain. We compiled a list of the different types of mushrooms, which produce sclerotia (magic truffles), in order of strength:

  1. Psilocybe Mexicana
  2. Psilocybe Pajaritos
  3. Psilocybe Tampanensis
  4. Psilocybe Atlantis

And some cross-breeds:

  • Psilocybe MiniMexicana
  • Psilocybe Galindoii
  • Psilocybe Hollandia

Option 2: Microdosing XP truffles

If you want to microdose in a more intuitive way and don’t feel like weighing the truffles all the time, the ready-to-use Microdosing XP truffles strips are a good option. These vacuum packed truffles are sold in strips of 6 x 1 grams.

Hans Grootewal of FreshMushrooms, market leader in the cultivation of psilocybin mushrooms and magic truffles for over 25 years, introduced this first legal ready-to-use Microdosing product to the market two years ago. Our partner webshop Microdose.nl had the pleasure to be the first distributor in the Netherlands to offer these strips. After a year of experimenting with different types of truffles and packing materials, FreshMushrooms succeeded to bring a safe and reliable product of high quality to the market.

How long do Microdosing XP truffles keep?

Microdosing XP truffles will keep for between 6 to 10 weeks. This also depends on the road the truffles have traveled from grower to customer. Because our partner webshop Microdose.nl delivers the truffles directly from the grower they can guarantee a shelf life of 10 weeks. That is why our Microdosing coaching team works with the Microdosing XP truffles from microdose.nl.

Our Microdosing Institute coaching team has been working with this handy product for two years now. We coach people with, among others, depression, burn-out and cluster headaches. For many clients it is incredibly convenient to microdose in this way, because not everyone has the time or opportunity to process the truffles themselves for microdosing. As a side note, we must say that with this method it is slightly less accurate microdosing, because the portions are sometimes slightly different. Although Magic truffles are much more consistent in strength compared to magic mushrooms, you still get the most accurate dosage if you dry a large supply and grind it together, so that each microdose has the same strength.

All in all, the method you want to work with remains a matter of personal preference.

What is microdosing magic truffle rebranding?

Since Microdosing started to increase in popularity, many online companies modernized their old Magic Truffle packaging and started selling them as Microdosing truffles. This is called “Rebranding”. Equipped with a flashy package, these 15-gram portions of Magic Truffles are often offered at high prices.

Perhaps you have seen the endless stream of Microdosing advertisements on Facebook and Instagram. Companies are currently tumbling over each other with ads offering Magic truffles for microdosing in fancy ‘rebranded’ packages for a very high price – compared to the shops that have been selling the same truffles for years.

The average price for a 15-gram portion of magic truffles is between €10 and €15, depending on the strain. Practically all prices above that are due to”rebranding”. Here you only pay for the nice packaging. Please do some good research before you buy truffles for microdosing.

So don’t be fooled by unrealistic promises or fancy packaging. If a provider only promises benefits, without any scientific proof and without naming the possible negative effects, then it’s probably legit to question the provider’s intentions.

Microdosing can be a powerful tool for personal growth, but it is not a panacea, nor a solution to all your problems. Microdosing Institute is involved in many of the scientific studies that are going on right now, with some positive results, but the amount of research that has been done is still very minimal. There have only been two clinical MD studies done with LSD by our partners at Maastricht University. Magic truffles for microdosing have never been the subject of clinical research. However, Microdosing Institute did cooperate with the Psychedelic Society of the Netherlands and the University of Leiden and conducted an interesting study with truffles in 2017: The effect of microdosing on creativity. We also followed our Microdosing students for 10 weeks during their microdosing course.

Here you will find more tips on processing truffles for microdosing.

However, if you want to start microdosing immediately and do not feel like drying and weighing your microdose then option 2 is a very good choice: the ready-made vacuum-packed 6 × 1 grams Microdosing XP truffles ‘Mexicana’.
